Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire – A Chilly Rehash
“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” attempts to reignite the franchise with a fresh coat of nostalgia, but ultimately gets lost in the blizzard of callbacks and familiar tropes. While the film offers a few entertaining moments and a decent dose of fan service, it lacks the heart, wit, and originality that made the original a classic.
This time around, the action moves to a small town, where a single mother and her two kids discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters.(Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire review – time to consign franchise to the spirit realm, 2024) The film leans heavily on references to the 1984 film, from the iconic Ecto-1 to the return of familiar ghouls and gadgets. While these nods will undoubtedly please longtime fans, they often feel more like a crutch than a clever homage.
The new cast, while likable enough, struggles to step out of the shadows of their predecessors. The script offers little in the way of character development, leaving the actors to rely on tired archetypes and predictable jokes.
The special effects are impressive, delivering some genuinely spooky and visually spectacular sequences. However, even the impressive CGI can’t mask the film’s predictable plot and lack of genuine scares.
