“Hit Man,” the latest action-comedy from director Richard Linklater, attempts to blend gritty crime thrills with offbeat humor, but ultimately misses the mark. While the film boasts a talented cast and a promising premise, it struggles to find a consistent tone, leaving viewers with a somewhat muddled experience.

The film stars Glen Powell, fresh off his “Top Gun: Maverick” success, as Gary Johnson, a mild-mannered New Orleans forensic accountant leading a double life as a highly skilled, if somewhat reluctant, hitman for the FBI. When Gary’s cover is blown during a routine assignment, he finds himself caught in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with both the mob and his own handlers.

Powell is undeniably charismatic as Gary, effortlessly switching between the character’s timid facade and his deadly alter ego. However, the script never fully commits to either side of Gary’s personality, resulting in a protagonist that feels somewhat underdeveloped. The supporting cast, including Adria Arjona as a mysterious woman from Gary’s past and Austin Amelio as a ruthless mob enforcer, deliver solid performances but are unfortunately saddled with thinly written characters.

Linklater’s signature dialogue-driven style, while effective in his previous works, feels somewhat out of place in the context of a high-stakes action film. The pacing suffers as a result, with moments of genuine tension often undercut by meandering conversations and quirky character interactions.

While “Hit Man” boasts a few thrilling action sequences and moments of genuine humor, it ultimately fails to deliver on the promise of its intriguing premise. The film’s uneven tone and underdeveloped characters prevent it from reaching its full potential, leaving viewers with a somewhat forgettable experience.

Should you watch it? “Hit Man” might satisfy die-hard fans of the cast or those looking for a light, undemanding action-comedy. However, those seeking a truly engaging and well-executed crime thriller might want to set their sights elsewhere.
