That’s the question A Breed Apart (2025) tries to answer — or at least hint at — in this so-called horror-comedy that pits social media influencers against genetically altered, man-eating dogs on a remote island. Directed by Griff and Nathan Furst, this remake-slash-reimagining of The Breed (2006) sets up what could’ve been a nostalgic creature-feature homage. Unfortunately, what we get is an AI-drenched mess with barely functioning dialogue, cringe-inducing humor, and some of the worst CGI of the decade.

The Plot: Social Media, Survival, and CGI Canines
The premise is oddly promising. Violet, an aspiring influencer played by Grace Caroline Currey, joins a weekend getaway with other internet personalities on a private island. The goal? Capture exclusive content and maybe tame some legendary wild dogs rumored to roam the area.
The twist? These aren’t your average feral dogs — they’re hyper-aggressive CGI monstrosities infected with a fictional ferality virus, thanks to a 15-year-old prologue involving a movie gone wrong, rabid bats, and one loose canine.
Soon, the influencers are not influencers — they’re prey.
Sounds fun, right? It could’ve been. But somewhere between the script and post-production, A Breed Apart loses any sense of cohesion, tension, or believability.
Direction, Script, and Tone: What Went Wrong?
Griff and Nathan Furst, known for low-budget TV horror like Lake Placid 3 and Nightmare Shark, seem to aim for campy horror with meta-humor. The problem? The script doesn’t land a single punchline. Dialogue feels like AI-generated Facebook memes from 2013. It’s less Scream and more Sharknado without the charm.
The film wants to parody influencer culture and creature feature tropes. But it ends up parodying itself.
Hayden Panettiere, billed as a lead, appears for less than 10 minutes. Her character, Hayden Hurst, plays a fictionalized version of herself in the film’s universe — a meta nod that could’ve been fun had it not been squandered.
Visuals and CGI: A New Low
Let’s address the monstrous digital elephant in the room: the CGI.
It’s bad. Distractingly, comically, embarrassingly bad.
The dogs are more PlayStation 2-era cutscene than believable threat. Backgrounds are visibly green-screened, camera angles jump erratically, and entire environments feel like AI image generators stitched them together on a tight deadline. Several viewers have likened it to those bizarre “dog wedding” viral videos shared by elderly relatives on social media. That’s not a compliment.
This overreliance on artificial visuals strips the movie of all suspense and immersion. It’s hard to feel fear when your brain is trying to figure out whether you’re watching a movie or a meme.
Performances: Wasted Potential
The cast isn’t entirely hopeless — it’s the direction and script that does them dirty.
Grace Caroline Currey tries her best with a cardboard role, while Virginia Gardner and Joey Bragg are reduced to meme-spouting caricatures. Riele Downs and Page Kennedy provide some energy, but with lines as flat as the audio mix, there’s not much they can do.
Hayden Panettiere? Criminally underused. A cameo more than a comeback.
Editing and Sound: Disorienting Chaos
Apart from the CGI, the editing and sound design are equally frustrating. Dialogue often gets buried beneath mismatched sound cues, odd musical stingers, or just plain static. Cuts between scenes are abrupt and nonsensical — one minute you’re running from killer dogs, the next you’re watching TikTok-style filters overlay dramatic deaths.
It’s not surreal. It’s sloppy.

If you’re looking for a well-crafted horror-comedy, A Breed Apart isn’t it. It could’ve worked as a campy satire, but it fails to commit to either horror or humor. The excessive use of AI visuals, poor dialogue, lackluster performances, and abysmal editing all contribute to a film that feels more like a TikTok experiment than a feature-length production.
Yet for some, this might fall under the “so bad it’s good” category — the perfect party movie to watch ironically with friends, snacks, and no expectations.
